The drive to Pafos reveals ever-changing scenery from vineyards and citrus groves to archaeological sites. Our first stop is at Curium. This Greco-Roman site sits on a clifftop high above the Mediterranean and its beautiful open-air theatre offers spectacular views in all directions. We then pass through Episkopi, the largest British base before enjoying time at Petra tou Romiou - Aphrodite’s birthplace, where the goddess is said to have been born from the waves. In Pafos we head straight for the House of Dionysos and its famous mosaics, which were discovered quite by accident in 1962! We pass the ruined castle of Saranta Kolones, ‘Forty Columns’, and St. Paul’s Pillar, where the apostle is said to have been flogged when he and Barnabas brought Christianity to the island. We also pass the entrance to the catacombs of Ayia Solomoni, marked by a large terebinth tree laden with pieces of material.
It is said that if someone is ill and their family ties material belonging to that person to one of the branches of this holy tree, the sick person will be miraculously cured. After a stroll round the picturesque harbour we begin our return journey.
