The journey to Kykko highlights the contrasting scenery between the coast and the highlands. The pine-clad shoulders of the mountains lead to Olympus (1,951 metres), the summit that offers spectacular views in all directions. Amidst mountain slopes and pine trees is Kykko, the largest monastery in Cyprus. It was founded in 1092 by the hermit, Isaias. In the monastery’s chapel is one of the three icons of Our Lady said to have been painted by St. Luke. Close to Kykko lies Throni, and the tomb of Archbishop Makarios, the first President of Cyprus who died in 1977. He chose his own burial place because it overlooked Kykko where he trained as a monk. The return journey is via Panayia, the birthplace of Makarios, and Cedar Valley.
* Please note, visitors to all monasteries are requested to be properly dressed.
During the winter months, Kykko monastery and Throni are visited only if weather conditions permit, otherwise another monastery is visited.
