Discovering the pretty mountain villages is great fun as life there continues at a slower and more traditional pace. Omodhos village stands on the southern slopes of the Troodos mountains and is well known for its wines and intricate lace work. It is very picturesque as its white stone houses line the cobbled streets around the Monastery of the Holy Cross, one of the oldest monasteries in Cyprus. Kakopetria village lies on the northern flanks of the mountains and is full of old-world charm and folklore. Its name means ‘bad stone’ and this particular story is revealed as you enjoy lunch and explore the oldest part of the village. Nearby is the beautiful church of Ayios Nicolaos tis Stegis (St. Nicholas of the Roof), one of the ten painted churches of the Troodos mountains which we will also visit.
The return journey is via Lania, which is known locally as the village of the artists, as it is home to several, and its traditional architecture and cobbled streets bring out the “artist” in visitors with cameras or sketch pads.
