Paphos has an attractive harbour where you can enjoy the fish taverns and cafes while watching the colourful fishing boats and pleasure craft which anchor in the lee of the Medieval Fortress just a few minutes away many major archaeological sites.
Founded by Agapinor, a hero of the Trojan War from Arkadia, Paphos was the capital of the island in Ptolemean times. In the 15th century BC the city was razed by an earthquake and was rebuilt with the help of Emperor Octavian August. Here, according to legend, Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love and Beauty rose from the sea.
