Larnaca District Larnaca Area Larnaca Center

Larnaca nowadays has become quite a tourist area, providing visitors with not only ancient monuments but with a spread of shops, restaurants and cafes.The Palm Tree Promenade of Larnaca is known for its picturesque attitude and tranquil atmosphere to both locals and visitors.

According to historical evidence Kitium was settled by the Phoenicians during the 9th century BC. In 312 it was conquered by Ptolemies. During the Hellenistic Period the city became known as Larnaca, meaning sarcophagus, many of which have been unearthed in the area.During the last 30 years Larnaca experienced important developments including Larnaca Airport becoming Cyprus International Airport following the Turkish invasion in 1974.

Larnaca Archaeological Museum

Collection of finds from the area dating from the Neolithic age to the roman period.

Larnaca Fort

Once a prison it now houses a small museum and the cultural center

Ayios Lazaros Church

9th century church tomb of Lazaros.  Baroque woodcarving and interesting icons.

Kition

13th century remains of city kingdom with fortified walls and 5 temples.

Hala Sultan Tekke

A place of Muslim pilgramage at the Salt Lake. A gathering area for wild flamingos during the migrating season.

Larnaca District:

 
Stavrovouni Monastery

Mountain of the Cross founded by St Helen.  Fragment of the Holy Cross to be seen.  Women are not allowed and visiting hours are limited.

Lefkara Village

Lefkara is a traditional village with original village architecture. It is famous for it’s lace, known as “Lefkaritika”. Leonardo da Vinchi, when he visited Cyprus in 1481 purchased lace of Lefkara for the Milan Cathedral. Further to the South is the remarkable site of Choirokitia  - one of the most important Neolithic settlements in the world. It is included in the Unesco World Heritage List. 

Choirokoitia Included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage official list, it is the site of a Neolithic settlement found in a better state of preservation than most other from this period, not only in Cyprus but in the while Mediterranean region.
Fatsa Wax Museum

A wax museum with more than 150wax images from main historical events, offering not only a strong impression not only of history but of the day-to-day life of the country.
