Nature lovers can mostly enjoy the floral tapestry in Cyprus during the winter months. Spring comes early
in Cyprus, brushing away the winter cobwebs
with a vibrant kaleidoscope of colour, as a myriad
of different flowers burst into bloom, nurtured
by the winter rains.
No corner of the island is left untouched as fields
and hedgerows are transformed overnight by sunshine-coloured
crown daisies and scarlet red poppies. Giant fennel
flourishes everywhere, and carpets of breathtakingly
beautiful candy coloured anemones seem to appear overnight.
Pale pink cyclamen thrive in every rocky crevice especially
on the coastal cliffs of Latchi, the Baths of Aphrodite
and in the hidden world of the Avakas Gorge.
With over 1,000 species of plants on the island, it
is a nature lover's paradise. Tiny blue irises, can
be found nestling in the new grass, along with the dark
purple flowers and crinkled leaves of mandrake, whilst
in complete contrast, the tall willowy stems of asphodel
display their delicate star-shaped flowers.
Up the Troodos mountains the clear air is filled
with the frangrance of fresh pine and herbs. In woody
glades near Prodromos , peonies indeep shades of cerise
can be fond, whilst even on most isolated slopeds young
crocuses and vilets grow in profusion.
The trees are in blossom too and numerous villages
on the road to Polis Chrysochou are veiled in the prettiest
almond and cherry blossom, the sweet aroma of citrus
blossom can be enjoyed in many areas, and the fresh
green shoots on the gnarled vines reach up to greet
the spring time sun.
More than 30 different species of wild orchids can
be found growing in the most unusual places. For botanists
part of the joy is that there are many hybrids to discover,
which can prove very challenging! It is not uncommon
to see more than a dozen differnt orchids on the walk
. One amaterur botanist, Pamela Scraton last year rediscovered
orchis papilionacea, an orchid that had not been seen
or recorded since 1960.
